Get Around, Get Around, I Get Around (To Updating)

September 29, 2009

I’ve been busy setting up my classes for the upcoming semester and been swamped with work as well from my jay-oh-bee recently, so this blog has been neglected (plus there’s a glut of video games, both purchased and incoming, that I have to get around to). My September pre-orders should be coming in soon, and it will be a doozy. I’ve also made a pre-order for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Veteran Package for the PS3.

The Nyan Knight

August 27, 2009

Looks like there’s another Ranka coming out to add to my Macross Frontier collection. I’m most likely skipping the Nyan Nyan restaurant version, despite the presence of meat buns on that one, and going straight for this one of her in her concert wear. I already have the Banpresto Ichiban Kuji version of her doing her kira! pose, but this one looks to be even more moe-some.

This version of Ranka will go well with the MegaHouse Sheryl I will be receiving near the end of this month when my bulk package from HobbySearch ships out.

In the meantime, I’m currently playing through Batman: Arkham Asylum for the PlayStation 3 right now. Picked up the Limited Edition on Monday, which came with all these goodies, including the Batarang on a stand. This game comes highly recommended to anyone looking for a good third person action game with a good storyline, and if they are in any way, shape, or form a fan of Batman and comic book superheroes in general.

I really wanted to play this on the PC, but a combination of delayed release (Sept. 15th for the PC version), lack of limited edition, and the PS3 receiving the exclusive Play As The Joker bonus prompted me to pick up the PS3 version. But this game is pretty damn good, that I will probably pick up the PC version in a few weeks and play through it again with 3D Vision and PhysX effects for the ultimate encore experience. But for now, I must go back to kicking ass as the Goddamn Batman!

Fuwa Figure Time!

July 26, 2009

WonFes 2009 kicks off, and while I am waiting for my Miku Hatsune Live Stage ver. figma, it looks like the figure gods were kind enough to bestow these figure previews upon us. The lovely ladies from K-ON! make their appearance in both scaled and nendoroid form!

Yui!

Mio!

Afternoon Tea Time!

Hopefully we will see scaled Mugi and Ritsu figures as well. Although I would like to see figures of the gang in their various Sawa-chan sensei provided cosplay. Via HobbyStock.

I Like My Figures Medium Rare, Mostly Rare

June 14, 2009

This is my first time trying out the Goody Japan deputy service to bid on a figure on Yahoo Japan Auctions. It was fairly painless, as I signed up, made an initial 100 yen deposit from my Paypal, and then went hunting on YJA for my Megahouse Ranka Lee Hobby Japan Limited Edition! Normally you would only be able to get this figure pre-ordering it through Hobby Japan magazine, and only one thousand will be made (or so they claim).

The reason I wanted the Hobby Japan edition is because I have an uncontrollable urge to get limited figures whenever I see them, and because I lurv Ranka, and because her hair in the regular version of this figure is some sort of snot/booger shade of green:

While the limited version is much closer to the deep green shade she sports in the Macross Frontier anime. Plus the white pantsu make her just seem so much more innocent and moe! So after finding an auction for this figure, I then filled out a Bidding form on the Goody Japan website. If you can’t read Japanese while browsing YJA, Google Translate is your friend! Because my bid was above 5000 yen, I had to make a deposit to Goody Japan’s PayPal account with my maximum bid before they would make the bid for me. After that, it was just the waiting game.

Victory was mine though, and now I am waiting for them to calculate the final cost from domestic and international shipping, as well as their commission fee. So far, Goody Japan has been quick with the e-mail notices, and everything has been generally painless. I will definitely use them again if I get my Ranka in my hands safe and sound.

I also saw that Banpresto was releasing another Ichiban Kuji line of figures, and this time around it was the Lucky Star gang cosplaying as the cast of Macross Frontier, with Konata as Alto-hime, Kagami as Clan, Tsukasa as Ranka, and Miyuki as Sheryl. After wiping the drool from my chin, I then went to Toys Logic as I knew they had the Macross Frontier set on pre-order before that I unfortunately missed, meaning I had to track down my Ichiban Kuji lovelies through auctions after they got released. This time, I was much faster on the draw and managed to snag the pre-order on Toys Logic.

There are still some pre-orders of Konata and the gang left too, so snag them before they are gone!

I also am trying out Joseph Tsai’s Tokyo Hunter service for this Dengeki Daioh-exclusive Aisaka Taiga from ToraDora!. Joseph is a fellow who lives in Tokyo who will order these exclusive magazine order figures for you if you don’t live in Japan and ship them too you, obviously with a commission tacked on. His asking price for Taiga here is 10,000 yen, and that’s without shipping, but I figure that it will still be cheaper than what I will see for her later on Yahoo Japan Auctions.

Joseph works through PayPal as well, and he is pretty fast on the e-mail responses, so I am confident here in my purchase.

I still have my regular pre-orders from HobbySearch on top of this rare stuff too, but I unfortunately won’t be getting around to them until next month, as I am still in the hospital going through my surgeries. My first lumbar puncture is tomorrow, wish me luck!

Volks Holo and Other Updates

May 28, 2009

Volks is coming out with their own 1/6 scale Holo, from the manga and anime Spice and Wolf. I reviewed the 1/8 GSC Holo earlier, and I also own the Kotobukiya Holo as well. But this actually looks pretty good as well. I love the mischievous face she has in this figure. This Holo will go up for pre-order on June 25th on the Volks Web Site Store. I sure hope that HobbySearch will start taking pre-orders as well.

A few updates: I’ve been playing inFamous for the PlayStation 3 as of late, which is why I’ve been sort of neglecting this blog. The game is an excellent PS3 exclusive, and although not a graphical showcase for the console like Killzone 2 is or the massive franchise power of Metal Gear Solid 4, it is still a worthwhile play if you own a PS3 and enjoy games such as Grand Theft Auto 4. I would say that the game bears the most resemblance to Crackdown, which was a XB360 exclusive.

Also, I will be in Japan next week. It will be my first time in this nation. My first two days will be spent purely in Akihabara with a bunch of empty suitcases, and seeing how much of my wallet I can obliterate. The rest of the week will be spent sightseeing in other less-otaku locations, and visiting an onsen. Pray for my bank account! I will be posting plenty of pictures as well.

On a more serious note though, after the week in the land of the Rising Sun, I will be spending a month in the Middle Kingdom (China), but not for vacation, as I will be undergoing a highly experimental surgery there. I will update on this later. In the meantime, some more naughty and devilish Holo.

Sweet pea, apple of my eye…

FREEing Zange-chan and Kagamin

May 19, 2009

These lovely ladies just went up for pre-order. Both figures are being produced by FREEing, who also made the Nagi-sama I reviewed earlier. Nagi-sama and Zange-chan here are from the manga/anime Kannagi, and while I complained in the FREEing Nagi-sama review that really no figure-maker has gotten Nagi’s face right, the Zange-chan here is pretty spot on.

Pretty spot-on here.

Kagami Hiiragi here is from the 4koma turned anime Lucky Star. The figure is made at a huge 1/4 scale, to go with Konata which should be arriving next month. Tsukasa has been announced but not listed for pre-orders yet, while Miyuki and any other potential Lucky Star girls (Yutaka, please?) have not been announced yet.

I am definitely getting my grubby mitts on Zange-chan to go with my Nagi, but the FREEing 1/4 Lucky Star girls are a hard sell for me purely due to their size. Its the reason why I didn’t get their 1/4 scale Haruhi bunny girls, because I just didn’t have room.

Figure K-ONtact!

April 27, 2009

Initially, I thought that my plea for K-ON! figures was answered, but then my hopes were dashed by this caveat: these are only trading figures. I now feel like a pothead who was just dealt a bag of oregano. Although I might still pick these up if I find them in the dealer rooms of whatever conventions I might find myself at in the next few months (probably Otakon).

Is it me though, or do Mio, Ritsu, Yui, and Mugi all look like they had a little too much of the snacks that Mugi brings into the club room? There are some serious thunder thighs on these girls. This band really needs to start playing death metal and crowd-surfing to work off those extra pounds that Yuji (the trading figure company making these) put on them. Still anxiously awaiting scaled PVCs, Figmas, and Nendos of my K-ON! girls.

Also, as a huge fan of the PS3 game Valkyria Chronicles, I noticed this and immediately geeked out. It’s Selvaria, one of the Empire’s generals and Valkyrur dominatrix supreme. As I just played through the DLC, including the Imperial missions where you get to play with Selvaria (“Behind her Blue Flame”), I am definitely hyped for this figure.

Is that a Valkyrian lance you are holding, or are you just happy to see me? (Don’t worry, she’s not a trap)

I’d get “behind” her “blue flame” anytime, although Alicia is still my favorite.
